One struggle I see a lot of new blogger’s, internet marketer’s and webmaster’s deal with is SPAM comments.
This can be a very annoying issue.
We don’t want to waste our time dealing with SPAM when we could be creating top notch site content, tweaking our landing pages and/or looking for more lucrative offers.
Everyone who has a site that has comment capabilities will face this issue. People are always looking for traffic and backlinks. It doesn’t matter that blog comments aren’t that valuable, because there is software out there that will allow these spammers to send out comments en masse with the click of a button.
There are a lot of plugins that can protect your WordPress site from SPAM. Of course, you should enable the Akismet plugin. That is a no-brainer, it even comes pre-installed with WordPress.
You can also look at plugins like IntenseDebate and DISQUS which offer another layer of security, but they are more advanced options.
If you want a simple way to limit your comment spam…then all you have to do is turn off comments after a certain time period. These Spammers love to hit old blog posts because these are much less likely to be monitored.
If you want to limit your spam comments, log into the back office of WordPress and click on Discussion (Under Settings in WP Menu).
Click on the check box beside “Automatically close comments on articles older than ___ days.”
Then in the blank spot add your days. I currently have mine set for 45, but any number longer than a month should do the trick. These just means that comments will be shut off each post, 45 days after I post it.
This way I don’t have to worry about monitoring these old posts. This trick, in combination with Akismet has made SPAM comments virtually disappear on my blog.
